Biography
As a young man, Gilbert's family moved to Little Falls, Minnesota from Quebec Canada. The 1885 Minnesota census shows Gilbert ( age 23) living in Belle Praire, MN with his family. He and his brother Theodore opened a general store in Bemidji, Minnesota in 1900. In 1902 (age 40), Gilbert came to the mining town of Bolster, Washington, a bustling mining town about 2 miles from Chesaw, Washington and only 2 miles south of the Canadian border. He operated the hotel in Bolster with his brother Theodore until the "boom" collapsed around 1910.
In 1944 (age 82), he moved to Oroville, about 20 miles from Bolster. Gilbert never married and utimately passed away on May 25, 1950 at St Martin's Hospital ( now called the North Valley Hospital) in Tonasket, Washington of old age. He was buried in plot 159-6 in the Oroville Cemetery. ( Entering the cemetery through the second gate, he is buried in the third row, approximately 13 plots to the left - next to Kellogg, Burger, then Gilbert Richard).
Inspection of the burial records at Bergh's Funeral Home showed the funeral was paid for by his neice, Mrs. Richard Hilby of Spokane, Washington. The cost of the funeral was $263.75 and his burial plot was $55.00.
