RICHARD dit Lafleur, GUILLAUME (styled Sieur de La Fleur, soldier of the Carignan-Salieres regiment, captain of the Canadian militia, and at one time churchwarden; b. 1641, son of Jean Richard, grain merchant, and his wife, Anne Meusnier, of Saint-Leger, bishopric of Saintes, France; d. 1690.

A strong family tradition states that Richard was the descendant of John Richards, a Welshman, who, as a member of the king's bodyguard, assisted the French king, Charles IX, to escape the frightful massacre of St. Bartholomew, 14 Aug. 1572.

Richard entered the French army as a young man, joining the Carignan-Salieres regiment at its formation in 1664. On the last day of May the following year he embarked for New France with his regiment, as a soldier in the company of Roger de Bobbeau de La Varenne, arriving at Quebec 19 August, after a long and tempestuous voyage. Two years later, when his regiment returned to France, Richard chose to remain in Canada. Shortly thereafter he was appointed sergeant in the Canadian forces, in which ranks he accompanied governor Frontenac to Cataracoui where Fort Frontenac was founded in 1673. He remained at the new post as its first commandant when the French returned to Quebec. Richard continued in that capacity until the return of Cavelier de La Salle in 1675, and was still at the fort in September 1677, according to a census of its garrison. Shortly thereafter he was appointed sergeant of the garrison at Montreal. By 1684 he was lieutenant of the vanguard company of that post and later was captain of the militia in the parish of Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montreal, where he had maintained his residence since 1679. Guillaume Richard dit Lafleur met a soldier's death on 2 July 1690, near Bout-de-I'lle de Montreal, when his small party of 25 was overwhelmed by a band of Iroquois warriors. Six days later the bodies of the fallen were buried hurriedly where they fell. In 1694 their remains were exhumed and reinterred in the cemetery of Pointe-aux-Trembles.

Richard's son, Jean-Baptiste, an interpreter, married Marie-Anne, the daughter of Pierre You de La Decouverte - an associate of La Salle in his discoveries on the Mississippi River - and of Elisabeth, a Miami squaw. Jean-Baptiste's daughter, Suzanne, became the wife of Gilbert Parant, merchant and interpreter at Detroit. Jean-Baptiste's son, Jean (b. 1721), according to tradition, was wounded and captured by western Indians, from whom he escaped three years later, finally reaching civilization on the lower reaches of the Mohawk River. He, in turn, served as interpreter in the Loyalist forces during the Revolutionary War and after peace was established he settled on the Bay of Quinte, where he died in 1807.

GUILLAUME RICHARD DIT LAFLEUR KILLED IN COMBAT
    AGAINST THE IROQUOIS HIS MONUMENT
    AT THE POINTE-AUX-TREMBLES

Guillaume Richard called Lafluer, was killed in combat against the Iroquois, on July 2, 1690. A monument has been placed at the battle site at Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The tourist who walks on the East side of the Island of Montreal, right where Gouin Boulevard turns South to intersection of Notre-Dame Street, will notice a monument erected by the "Commission des Sites at Monuments Historiques du Canada." The monument is next to a deep gully between the street which Notre Dame follows and the "Praries" river, an area called "Coulee Grou" for the last 250 years.

If you are able to visit, we recommend that you do as we have, get out of the car and read one of the worst pages in the history of Canada on the side of the Monument. This passage will be even more interesting for you than for the ordinary tourist since you will see the history of one of your ancestors and you will be able to say that you walk on the ground that he conserved for future generations with the sacrifice of his life.

The inscription that you will see on the side of the monument reads as follows:

"On July 2, 1690, Monsieur de Colombet, leading 25 men, attacked 100 Iroquois near this place. He was killed, along with 9 of his soldiers and 30 of the enemy. Jean Grou, owner of the farm, and three of his friends were captured by the savages and burned alive. Joseph Lajeunesse, a descendant ofGrou, gave this land and Rocks for the monument."

The records of the Pointe-aux-Trembles de Montreal, dated November 2, 1694 complete the history of this battle. Here is a copy of that text:

"The 2"d of July, 1690 at the end of the island, near the Coulee of Jean Grou, the Iroquois killed Sr. Colombet, a lieutenant, Joseph de Montenon Sr de laRue, whom the enemies burned behind the fort LaCheynaye, Guillaume Richard dit Lafluer, our lieutenant of militia, Jean Jalot, our surgeon. Jean Delpue dit parisot, Joseph Carrier dit Larose, Jean Raynau dit Planchar, burned at the Oneiouts with Jean Grou, (paschange) and the bohemian with the Father Millet, Jean Baudoin, son, Pierre Masta, and an employee of grand Bauchant named(?) . Pierre Payet dit St Amour was captured in the attack and made prisoner on July 2, 1690. He was given to the Oneiouts who saved him as well as Father Millet who returned in February, 1691."

"La dit St Amour came back to the fort in 1693."

"Since we feared the Iroquois, we quietly buried the bodies of those who had been killed right there at the site of the massacre. It was only the 2nd of November, 1694 that their remains were brought to the cemetary, where they were buried in the presence of most of the parish."

While you read the monument inscription "M. De Colombet, leading 25 men, attacked 100 Iroquois near here; he was killed along with nine of his soldiers..." you should understand that your ancestor, Guillaume Richard dit Lafluer was one of those soldiers and you are on the ground that he wet with his own blood.

    JACQUES ARCHAMBAULT and FRANCOISE TOURAULT
         (1604/5 - 1688) (abt 1599 - 1663)

the parents of Marie Archambault (bapt 1636 - 1719)
the mother of Agnes Tessier (1658 - 1732)
         the mother of Jean-Baptiste Richard (1682 - )
the father of Jean Richard (1721 - 1807)
the father of Owen Richards (1762-1846)

The couple were both born at Dompierre sur Mer, Lardilliere,
Charante-Maritime, France He was a few years younger than she as she may have been born in about 1600 and he was born in 1604/5. He was the son of Antoine Archambault and Renee Ouvrard. He wed Francoise Tourault on January 24, 1629 at Saint-Philibert du Pont-Charault, a locality in Chantonnay, La Roche-sur-Yon and there they brought seven children into the world before sailing across the Atlantic and arriving in New France. The children were Denis (bapt 1630), Anne, Jacquette, Marie (bapt 1636), Louise (bapt 1640), Laurent (bapt 1642), and Marie. In France, he was probably a laborer and also a wine maker as he sold three barrels of white wine to Jerome Bonnevie on August 15, 1637.
The family arrived in Canada in about 1645. Jacques probably had
the protection of Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny. When his daughter, Anne, signed her marriage contract in the presence of notary Bancheron on July 22, 1647, Jacques appeared as a servant of Legardeur. Then on the following October 2nd, Repentigy entrusted Jacques with the development of his farm. The five-year lease provided Archambault with 1 dwelling, 2 oxen, 2 cows, 1 heifer, pigs all appraised at a value of 732 livres. Jacques was already in debt to Legardeur. He was committed at this time to pay him 898 livres, 10 sols, upon the return of the ships from France. In addition, "in two years" Jacques must pay 500 livres for "half of the land which he will leave him the first year." As a tenant, Jacques could cut all the firewood he wanted, even sell it, by paying 10 sols a cord. This somewhat complicated contract, signed by notary Lecoustre, means that Jacques had just over-committed himself.
On August 19, 1645, after the death of Legardeur in 1648, Jacque
and Jean Juchereau, Sieur de Maure, set up their statement of accounts. Jacques owed his creditor 384 livres, 7 sols.
One fact is certain, on September 15, 1651, at Fort Saint-Louis in Quebec, Louis d’Ailleboust, Governor, ceded to Jacques Archambault, 4 arpents of frontal land "on the river of the great river saint Laurent in the place called le Cap rouge," between Nicolas Pinel and Pierre Gallet. Jean de Lauzon, new governor of office since October 13, 1651, confirmed this act of concession on November 17, 1652.
Here, on November 23, 1654, Jacques bought from Etienne Dumets a house which the latter had built on the Archambault concession. Price: 71 livres. How did Duments property end up on the Archambault land. Eventually, Jacques moved with his family to Montreal. On November 18, 1652, Monsieur de Mainsonneuve, governor of the island, gave Jacques 30 arpents of land joing the city, between son-in-law Urbain Tessier and Lambert Closse, more than an arepnt in the city to the north of Rue Notre-Dame, between the present Rue Saint-Laurent and Rue Saint-Joseph. Father Archange Godbout adds that on February 15, 1654, Jacques committed himself to live at Ville-Marie.
During the winter of 1655, Jacques and several residents of Ville-Marie made a deal with the master surgeon, Etienne Bouchard, who was hired on March 30 to “dress and give medications for all sorts of things, illnesses both natural and accidental, except for the plague,”
to the signers and their family for the yearly amount of 100 sols or 5
livres. This was the first example of health insurance established on
the continent. If Archambault was part of the system, it is because he had decided that it was very useful for his family living in the territory.
Finally, on October 11, 1658, Jacques made a transaction with Paul de Chomedey to dig a well, 5 feet in diameter, inside the fort of Ville-Marie, at the Place d’Armes. He guaranteed at least 2 feet of stable water in the bottom of the well. He was promised 300 livres.
He had a special talent for digging wells. On June 8, 1659, Father Gabriel de Queylus contacted Jacques. He needed a well "in the garden of the hospital of the said place." Jacques guaranteed the water like a master dowser, "two feet of stable water at least...in the presence of a current of water." The cleric would provide a support of 8 feet of wood, twenty planks, the stone, the lime, the sand, etc. Jacques took care of the ropes and received 300 livres and 10 pots of eau-de-vie in exchange for spring water! Jean Aubuchon and Jacques Millot signed as witnesses to this transaction.
On May 16, 1660, Jacques Leber asked Archambault to dig a well,
like the two others which he had already dug, for the use of the
community. The depth would be 15 to 18 feet. Promised price: 300 livres and 10 pots of eau-de-vie.
Things were going well. Jacques had work and was highly respected. His children were grown and only Jacquette was living in
Quebec. Then his wife, Francoise, fell ill. Doctor Bouchard could do
nothing and she was buried on December 9, 1663 at the age of 64.
After things settled he married the widow Marie Denot de Lamartiniere. It seems there were no children from this union.
According to Faillon, on May 15, 1672, Jacques was among the 29
notable people who initiated the election of mayor Louis Chevalier.
In the census of 1681, Jacques and his wife were living in the fief of Verdun, in the neighborhood of Montreal. Etienne Guyotte, a priest and curate of Ville-Marie, signed the death certificate of Jacques Archambault on February 15, 1688.
Of Jacques and Francoise’s descendents, Adelard Archambault
(1862-1923) became the lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and
Urgele-Eugene Archambault (1829-1904) founded the Polytechnique School of Montreal.
